Eastern Plaza Illuminated Cabinet, Set by Crane

What the Photograph Shows
The cabinet is mounted high on the left elevation of a corner building clad in large beige panels. It stands proud of the wall on visible returns rather than sitting flush, so it picks up light on its edges and reads from up the street as well as head on.
The face is black and the copy is yellow. Chinese characters run across the top, EASTERN over PLAZA sits in two lines beneath them, and a heavy yellow rule closes the block off along the bottom.
A second black cabinet sits on the return elevation to the right, carrying the VOIX logo in the same yellow with a loose circular stroke drawn around the wordmark. Two elevations, two cabinets, one for each approach to the corner.

One Face, Two Alphabets, Two Elevations
- A cabinet carries what letters cannot. A row of dimensional letters spells one word in one alphabet. This name needs two scripts stacked over each other plus a rule underneath, and a single face holds all of it. That is the ordinary reason a light box beats a letter set: the face does the talking and the box does the structure.
- Two scripts cost nothing extra on a printed face. Adding a second alphabet to a letter set means fabricating a second set of letters. Adding it to a cabinet face means artwork. On a bilingual sign that difference is most of the budget.
- Light copy on a dark field behaves differently at night. When a face like this one is lit from inside, only the copy transmits and the black field stays dark, so the letters read as type floating on the building rather than as a glowing rectangle. It is a quieter sign after dark than the same artwork reversed.
- Corners get two signs. Traffic reaches a corner building from two directions and a flat wall cabinet only faces one of them. Putting a cabinet on each elevation is cheaper than trying to solve both approaches with one oversized sign.
- Change the face, keep the box. Cabinets outlast the businesses that order them. When a tenant rebrands, the frame swings open, the face comes out and a new one goes in on the same steel and the same power. Face replacements are routine maintenance work for us.
- That height needs the truck. A cabinet at the top of an elevation, over a sidewalk, on a live corner is a crane job, not a ladder job. Working over a Philadelphia sidewalk or taking a lane typically needs a closure permit, and we file that through surveys and permitting as part of the job.
Cabinets are the workhorse of the trade for exactly the reason this corner shows. Retail tenants buy more cabinets than any other sign we make, because a cabinet holds a name, a logo and a second language at once, and it keeps doing it after the tenant changes.
